A CRYSTAL THAT NEVER REPEATS

Each note is a chain of weights and springs laid out as a quasicrystal: ordered, but never repeating, like a Penrose tiling. The low overtones of such a chain still stand in tune like a string. The high ones gather into shimmering clusters with silent gaps between them — a spectrum physicists draw as the Hofstadter butterfly. Crystal picks the pattern, Fracture decides how far the string becomes a crystal.

EDGE TONES THAT CROSS THE GAPS

Slide the pattern along the chain and something odd happens at its edges: single tones leave one cluster, glide through the silent gap and join the next, up or down. In physics this is called topological pumping, and the number of tones that cross is fixed by the pattern itself. Phase and Flow turn it; the mod wheel turns it faster.

A KNOT OF ENERGY THAT BREATHES

In the Breather material the springs stiffen or soften as they move. Strike it and the energy does not spread out: it gathers into a knot that stays in one place and pulses, which physicists call a discrete breather. Because the material is nonlinear, how hard you play changes the pitch and the colour, not just the volume — glass rises, rubber sinks.

TAMED BY ITSELF

Raw physical synthesis has a habit: overtones pile up into piercing, ear-tiring spots. Phason listens for that and softens those spots by itself, with no setup. An amber light in the plugin shows when it is working.

Before building Phason we went through plugin catalogues and audio research papers looking for an instrument built on these principles — quasicrystal chains, edge tones pumped across gaps, breathers. CRYSTAL
